Apple popularized this term with the advent of Apple II in the market during the late 1970s and the early 1980s. Later on this term was popularized by IBM with the IBM Personal Computer. Earlier to the advent of the microprocessor, the end users of the computer often did not interact with the machine directly but would prepare tasks for the machine on off line equipment such as card punches instead.
A number of assignments which are meant to be for the computer would be gathered and processed in batch mode. Users were able to collect the results after the assigned task has been complete. It could even take quite some hours or even a few days between submitting a job to the computing center and receiving the output. By the middle 1960s, a more interactive form of using computers developed commercially. Multiple computer terminals allow many people to share the use of one mainframe computer processor. Some examples of early mini computers which might be regarded as personal computer would include the LINC and PDP-8, VAX and larger mini computers from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Data General, Prime Computer.
